Programs
The SPC Regional Prevention Coalition works collaboratively across Johnston, North Providence, Smithfield, Scituate and Cranston to deliver evidence-based youth education and community-driven prevention initiatives. Together with our partners, we advance strategies that promote healthy behaviors and support safer, stronger communities.
Education Programs
Media Ready
Media Ready is an evidence-based youth media literacy program focused on messaging about alcohol and tobacco. Certified instructors deliver a 10-lesson curriculum to middle school students across the region, equipping them with the skills to recognize and critically evaluate how these industries target them.
Hidden in Plain Sight
Hidden in Plain Sight is an interactive program that helps parents recognize how vapes and substances can be concealed in a teen’s environment. Through a realistic mock bedroom, participants learn to identify warning signs and gain the knowledge to have informed, supportive conversations with their teens.
Pick Your Nos
Pick Your Nos is an interactive role-playing program that teaches early adolescents how to confidently say no to risky behaviors, including alcohol and other drug use. Through practical strategies and engaging scenarios, participants practice resisting peer pressure, setting boundaries, and making healthy choices.
Escape the Vape
Escape the Vape is a vaping prevention–themed escape room that engages students, educators, and families in an interactive learning experience. Participants work together to solve puzzles in a race against the clock while building awareness and learning key facts about vaping.
Caring for Yourself Over 50
This free presentation addresses key health topics affecting adults 50+, including medication management, opioid misuse, the risks of mixing prescriptions, and caregiving. Participants will also receive naloxone—a life-saving overdose reversal nasal spray—along with training on how to use it. Funded by RI BHDDH.
Naloxone Trainings
Naloxone, commonly known by the brand name Narcan®, is a safe, life-saving medication that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. We work to reduce opioid-related overdose deaths by providing free training and naloxone kits to community members and partners across the region.
Environmental & Community
PSAs & Geofencing
Public Service Announcements (PSAs) and geofencing campaigns deliver targeted prevention messages to specific audiences through digital and media platforms. By reaching individuals where they are, these strategies increase awareness and reinforce healthy decision-making.
Sticker Shock
Sticker Shock is a community awareness campaign that places warning labels on alcohol products to remind adults of the legal and safety risks of providing alcohol to underage youth. The initiative encourages responsible behavior and helps reduce youth access to alcohol.
Medication Safety
An extension of our safe drug disposal, storage education, and advocacy efforts, the SPC Prevention Coalition offers free medication lock bags by mail. To request lock bags for yourself or a loved one, contact us at spcregion1@gmail.com or call (401) 519-1903.
Drug Takeback
In collaboration with local law enforcement, our coalition supports the DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Days. These events focus on the safe disposal of medications to help prevent medication misuse and reduce opioid-related harm.
Compliance Checks
Compliance checks are conducted in partnership with local law enforcement to ensure retailers are following laws that prohibit the sale of alcohol and tobacco products to minors. These efforts promote accountability and help reduce youth access to substances.
Community Events
We bring prevention resources directly to the community through high school and college orientations, parent-teacher conferences, open houses, and local festivals throughout the year. If you see us, come say hello!
